The United States Congress recently approved plans to create a new commemorative coin honoring the 50th anniversary of the Apollo 11 moon landing. On December 5, 2016, the House of Representatives voted overwhelmingly in favor of bill H.R. 2726, titled the Apollo 11 50th Anniversary Commemorative Coin Act, which would authorize the U.S. Mint to produce and sell a limited number of unique gold and silver coins. The Senate approved the bill on December 10, sending it to the desk of President Obama.
If signed into law by the president, the Apollo 11 50th Anniversary Commemorative Coin Act will allow the U.S. Mint to begin creating as many as 50,000 five-dollar gold coins, 400,000 silver dollars, 750,000 half dollars, and as many as 10,000 one-dollar silver coins comprised of .999 fine silver. Each coin will feature a distinctive curved shape that will allow the obverse design, selected via a competition, and the reverse design, which will depict the iconic likeness of Buzz Aldrin, to meet along the edges.
